I've been thinking a lot about the Western Wall, also called Kotel by Jews, and the Wailing Wall by most Americans. It's been on my mind because of the song "A Cabin in the Woods" by Stephen Kellogg and the Sixers, which you can listen to on their site.

Anyway.

The Wall is all that remains of this incredibly old temple that stood in Israel. It's the holiest site that the average Jew can access and the Gates of Heaven are supposed to be located directly above it. When the temple was destroyed, Titus, the Roman conquerer responsible for its ruin, decided not to raze it and instead left it in ruins as a taunt and bitter reminder to Jews. Instead, Jews rallied around it: there, on that holy ground, G-d and faith were attacked but remain as reminders of G-d's presence on Earth.

People gather at the Wall at all hours (as you can see from that site to which I linked) to pray, because G-d is believed to pay special attention to the Wall, and it's sort of an intercom to G-d. You're probably familiar with the image of pieces of paper with prayers written on them stuffed in the cracks of the Wall. He listens more acutely to prayers said at the Wall, because where does a follower need their gd to hear them more than at a place where people tried to take Hir away?

When I was younger (and, to be totally honest, I still do it if I am alone nad no one is looking), I always picked up litter with writing on it. "'Bread, milk, butter'-- fascinating!" I felt connected to these people who forgot lists of important, life-sustaining things. This is why Found Magazine appeals to me. I also am fascinated by graffiti-- the "I was here" scene in "The Shawshank Redemption" kills me, and whenever I go to a public library in a big city, I look at the graffiti left in the cubical. It's mostly written by homeless people who find shelter in the libraries.

For me, the SDS joins this need for connexion (with the divine, as Jews feel at the Wall; with random shoppers that I felt as a child; with the outcast I experience now) with the need for confession and expurging.

And I think that makes it pretty neat.

UPDATE-A-RAMA! I have a new LCD screen. I have a new keyboard. I have a new uplink cable (which virtually guarantees that I'll find my old one within the day). Therefore, there are new secrets up. This is just a taste. I'm holding out for more submissions. (There are some really good ones to come!)

Oh, and PS: we really like getting feedback on the secrets themselves. We are also currently working on a section of the site where people write about what this project means to them. Feel free to comment either on specific secrets or on the project as a whole here or through the submission form.
